lotro is a step up from the simplicity of d2. lots of questing content, much more mature players (for the most part), and has many facets for a new player to learn. it's similar to WoW, or any of the other popular mmorpgs like final fantasy, swtor, etc... as far as game mechanics.
it's not too hard to pick up. you'll likely find someone, or a kin (guild), in game to help you familiarize yourself, in whatever server you choose to play on. good luck
