Did you ever read the Silmarillion? I must have started that book half a dozen times and never made it past 100 or so pages. It was just so hard to read. More like a dictionary than anything else.

all the books Will listed are great, but i did NOT enjoy the Annihilation series personally. it was all build up with no payoff, for me.
also read Stephen King's latest "The Outsider", classic King character development in a surprisingly short window. Gruesome subject matter without turning your stomach, the plot is that a young boy in a small town was raped and murdered, and there's only one suspect, the local youth baseball coach. The only problem is, he was in another town the day of the murder, and has a seemingly believable alibi trail. The hangup? he was seen at the same time all over town including picking up the murdered boy when his bike tire got a flat. dun dun dun.....
