i want to host tournaments at some point in the future.
Just to be a balancing point here - There is absolutely nothing preventing you from hosting a tournament, and I would encourage anyone that wants to contribute the the community in this way. Alot of people that have carried over from D2 are set in their ways in what lld should look like, but I am more relaxed. This is not the same game, not the same mechanic's and we dont have to do it the same way every time. In terms of the rules you are suggesting you should clarify what these duels look like, i.e. are you allowing telestaffs? If you are not allowing telestaffs I see what you are trying to do re: no energy shield, but if you allow tele staffs, there are several builds that can toe to toe vs a sorc.
If resist is not capped and repl life is not capped then elemental damage dealers such as a fb and blizz can not win duels where both players are equal, at the very least the duels (a ft5) from skilled players, well equipped players (say 35~60 repl life each) could last over an hour.
In terms of slow, once you allow any % of slow you turn a balanced matchup (where the paladin is already favoured) into a 1 sided demolition vs an Amazon (and certain other builds too). I dont understand the need for opening this door when the ones that benefit from it are already quite strong, even while accepting that desync no longer works.
In terms of the recent cooley tournaments (and the ones currently hosted by me) mana pots are/were allowed, but this is acknowledging that alot of ppl are not geared yet. there are staples at each dueling bracket and at 30 there are a host of ways to get decent mana cheap (such as spirit, frost burns, stones of jordan and even insight). There was once an arguement that shapers, or rabies druids required no skill. I countered that at the time by saying that it takes skill to build a proper rabies character (and a degree of skill to play one, nevermind a shaper). Therefore mana resource management is a skill, like maintaining stamina in a frw duel bowa vs barb. However, be that as it may, allowing mana potions as a stop gap for players that do not have proper mana amounts is understandable and I would envisage that tournaments allowing potions would enable players on a tight budget to compete.
