The shark has to be kept alive and transferred to fresh water. The salinity from salt water begins to harden/rubberize the skin/fats if the shark is killed and skinned in salt water. We used to make awesome belts with my dad back in 1996 on my dad's shark farm. If you do it in saltwater, you can make elastic bands for underwear and socks.

lol omg, when i asked i didnt think id get an answer from someone who grew up on a shark farm
