that wasn't my point lol

I think ow is very overlooked, doing damage while not being in the line of fire is a great thing to have

apart from negligible low dmg - when arent you in line of fire with a barb (after you got close to someone)?

let me rephrase: you're doing damage while not directly next to your opponent, which is some cases is safer (vs fber sorcs/necs/hdins for example)

it won't win the duel on its own for sure but it can certainly help vs characters you don't get much of a window to attack in

Doing instant damage is certainly much more beneficial than doing damage over time, regardless of the situation.

I do understand that Um does more total damage than an ed/str/AR/-req jewel, but it only gives a twenty five percent chance of doing such damage.

Even without taking into consideration the fact that instant damage is better than damage over time and even without taking into consideration the life gained by using a jewel instead of an Um, the damage added by an Um rune (OW damage*0.25) is less that the damage added by a jewel.

Sword isn't good enough to use as a damage sword - oath can be used for that (which is pretty much my point). this is a good chance to maintain damage along with OW

I agree when you say instant dmg is for what you look on most chars. When you look at the average dmg um-rune does more than twice the dmg than a 30 ed jewel in an eth hb (0 dr at target).
Since Ow doesnt get reduced by dr its a usefull socked for bvb or melee duels in general while i find the ed+stat jewel more beneficial when dueling mostly ama/nec.

When the average OW damage added by an Um is LESS than the average damage added by a jewel there is no argument that I can think of that would favor using the Um.

Besides the average damage being less, there are numberous other reasons that the jewel is superior.

1) Extra life when using the jewel.
2) Instantaneous damage instead of damage that takes time to accumulate.
3) OW damage can't bring your opponent below 1 life, while the jewel damage can be enough for the kill.
4) OW triggering twice in a single WW pass is the same as if it triggered once.

Please keep in mind that these "intagibles" listed above could be used to argue that a jewel is superior to an Um, even if the Um did more average damage than the jewel. However, we are comparing a scenario in which the jewel does more average damage AND ALSO grants the 4 benefits listed above.
