Russia is largely misrepresented in terms of their aims politically, Putin is not the evil person he's portrayed nor is he a saint. He's a ruthless dictator who just happens to have a large mandate because he is doing what is wildly popular and fits the alphamale ideal well enough to be near-worshipped in his country. I mean think about it, russian democracy is a bad joke. all of the elections are fixes and the media is strictly controlled, everyone knows this in the country, and most still support Putin.

But let's not be too cavalier in propping up Russia. They have an objectively worse education system than the US (sorry greg) but are actually more comparable than most US citizens would like to admit when contrasted with leading 1st world nation's like Scandanavia and Japan in terms of educational outcomes. And let's not ignore that the Russian populace has alcoholism and drug use problems that are really incomparable in the first world, the US being a distant second in many categories there. And Russia essentially brokered a deal with China to provide oil at near cost to stop the Russian economy from collapsing. If the sanctions eventually touch that deal Russia will be shot back into a 3rd world country in terms of organization and mandate like they were at the end of the cold war. Only this time their weapons caches they have to get back in black are 20 more years outdated. Which essentially means their only prospective buyers are in the black market, so be prepared to see ISIS outfitted with Iron Curtain era RPGs and ATVs if Russia falls.
