Zeal Guide
There were really only ever 2 MLD Zealers on EU. While Zeal was spoken of and used in previous patches it has at this point been relegated to a mere footnote in the history of Diablo 2. Libby's & V/T's are cheaper to build (Skillers rather then small charms), more versatile (Ranged Attack, Cannot be blocked, Auto Targeting etc.) and are basically better all round characters with far fewer anti-characters. Meanwhile, a Smiter does not require attack rate and auto hits. Zeal unfortunately is at the bottom of the paladin food chain being reliant on Attack Rating and having an attack that can be blocked and which is not auto-targeting [ Unlike say, Fury for a Druid ]. Having said all that, Zeal CAN work, it HAS good damage, and its not mainstream. It has the inherrent quality that all MLD paladins have - that is - Hello Spirit Shield/Zaka (all your resistances right here) and 1 point Charge still does great damage vs everything. Very similar to a Smiter, You dont need alot of hotkeys and it is fairly straightforward to play.
Finally, with Bowa's prevalent, you will always be welcome in TvT with the Frame and Damage Boost brought by Fanaticism, and the ability to Insta-Kill the opposing Bowa.
Gear:
Gores
Raven
String
Ring 1xxar 30 life 90 mana 30 Cold res
Rare Gloves with 20 ias
Zaka + Holy Shield Stick on Switch*
Shaftstop
Spirit Shield
Oath SC (or a better rare)
3Off/100 Life Amulet (or Rare 2Off or 1 Pala)*
Gulli
*You need the Off or +1 Pala amulet in order to attain level 23 Fana
*If you want to hardpoint Holy Shield you could always use a FoH Stick on switch (Conv + FoH + Other + Facets), that will be taking you outside of a pure zealer, but is probably the most optimal switch setup.
Invent:
x40 3/20/20
Pro: More Life, AR and Damage
Con: 50% less defence [5.5K] compared to skiller based paladins [11K]. ZB Shaft / Zaka don't give as large a defence bonus
Skill Placement:
Max Fanaticism
Max Sacrifice
1 Point Medi
1 Point Charge
1 Point Holy Shield (if you dont have a Holy Shield on Switch Slot)
All remaining points into Zeal
Maxing Fana must be done in order to attain both max possible damage, and crucially, max Zeal attack speed.
Maxing Zeal instead of Sacrific gives you less damage
Attack Breakpoints:
You need level 23 Fanaticism, this means your amulet must be either 3 OFF / 100 Life, 2 Off 60 + Adds or 1 Pala 60 life + Adds.
Where it is broadly agreed that the standard weapon is an Oath Small Crescent, there is little wiggle room for variance in apportioning your skill points.
You need level 23 Fana and 83% IAS to attain max Zeal breakpoint [ 4/4/4/4/8] with a Small Crescent. That means Max Fana + Spirit Shield and either a SOJ (not recommended) or a amulet that grants at least +1 off Skills.
For item IAS its: Oath SC [ 50ias ] + Gloves [ 20ias ] + 1 Jewel 15ias/30ed.
Rare Weapon Type comparison for the viable bases:
Small Crescent - 49 avg damage, Range Adder 1, Speed 10
Hyperion Javs - 41.5 avg damage, Range Adder 2 - Speed -10
Stygian Pilum - 48 avg damage, Range Adder 2 - Speed 0
Tyrant Club - 39 avg damage, Range Adder 1, Speed 0
Naga - 30.5 avg damage, Range Adder 2, Speed 0
The rankings below will show where a Small Crescent sits in the pecking order for rare Zeal weapons.
1. Stygian Pilum : Faster base type, better range, less IAS required, comparable damage, ability to throw, high dex requirements
2. Hyperion Javs : Faster base type, better range, much less IAS required, lower damage, ability to throw, higher dex requirements
3. Small Crescent
4. Tyrant Club : Faster base type, equal range, less IAS required, lower damage
5. Naga : Faster base type, better range, less ias required, much lower damage
While i have javelins as being #1 and #2 base type, it must be noted that as they cannot have 1 (or 2) sockets, the argument remains that SC is the #1 base type (i.e. a rare can spawn 30ias 2 sox 450 ed) noting additional damage, IAS or even Open Wounds can be added to the weapon.
While there are more base types that can be used, these are predominantly range adder 0 which does not suit Zeal's attack mechanics.
Where you want better range, a Naga is the most optimal substitute to a Small Crescent.
Stash:
x8 20/17 [ for when you need the mana ]
20/11 cold charms [ sufficient to attain Cold Stack ]
Infernostride, Dwarfstar, Hotspurs
A dusk 4 sox 100 life ED + Adds can be used in 1v1 where you are dueling vs physical damage opponents.
