I'm taking my car to a mechanic tomorrow but want to know what could be wrong with my brakes before hand so I won't be ripped off or anything.

So my car is approaching 40,000 miles it's a 2006 Hyundai Sonata and I haven't been driving it a whole lot this winter. I've taken it out a few times without problems. But yesterday I take it to a barber like 10 miles away, I get there park and when I come back to my car and get back on the road I notice my brakes are making a weird sound. It was like a honky type sound but it didn't seem to affect my ability to brake. But the entire way back it made the sound. I know that once brake pads go there is like a squeal noise that initially happens but this wasn't the case. The parking lot at the barber wasn't shoveled well and salty and sandy so I thought maybe it was that? But it could be like the rotors or something I don't really know.

Any idea?

Flux capacitors sometimes make "honky" noises when they aren't operating correctly.

unless there are drunk rednecks in your brakes you need to learn to describe the issue better or take video so we can hear what your talking about.

Take your wheel off and look for yourself.

I changed the brakes on my gf's car, 07 Elantra, and it was time consuming but very easy.
Shops were wanting $210 for each set, the auto stores were wanting $158 for each set, so I looked online and found the same break sets (rotors and pads) for $119 total with 2 day shipping.

Cost me a 6 pack to use an air compressor and some air tools.
Do it yourself if you can.

sounds like you left your ebrake up or you need new pads or your calipers arent releasing

if you arent mechanically inclined dont do your brakes yourself cuz u wont do it right and probably end up dead
