Any recommendations on a remote start system that is fairly inexpensive?
How easy are they to install?

accept that you'll be paying someone to do it and buy w/e viper product fits your budget.

this isn't one of those things you cheap out on unless you want problems.

And going inexpensive isn't always the best idea. Like the two above said, pay a reputable dealer to install it.

https://www.nh-car-audio.com/ This is the place i got mine done. They mostly specialize in remote start and sound systems. Do your research for a dealer in your area.

My car cost $700 for a two-way fob install. It was expensive because it was a good range remote, two-way, and my car has a push button start with keyless entry. If your car is manual, it may also cost more too.
I wouldn't cheap out on the range either, it's dissapointing to spend the money and having the range cut short to the point where you would have to walk closer to your car to start it. i can start mine anywhere in my work building without any issues, and since it is two-way, it tells me if it successfully started or not.

I went for 2500 ft range compustar over viper but i forget the reason why. I think it was slightly cheaper.

I keep OnStar on my truck just so I can start it anywhere with the smart phone app and see how much fuel is in it after I don't drive it for a week.

Everyone in here is right on. You don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles but you want to buy a high quality product and have a reputable installer do the work in case you have issues. I did a remote start install on a 2002 silverado and I will never do another one. PITA.

Oh yeah, you can have a smart phone application starter, but it's still an expense.

The older the car, the cheaper it most likely will be.

i love my onstar app lol. start the car, lock or unlock it, whatever you want. also tells me oil life, tire pressures and all that good stuff. once the free wears off i may have to pay to keep it up.

does adding an auto starter void warranty? and would it be worth it to install an aftermarket alarm as well?
