Hey folks, I drive a '96 z3, it's up to about 90k miles on it now.

Sound is from under the car (you can hear it best with windows down and driving by a wall/car, as the sound echo's off and I can hear it better).
It typically happens when accelerating (doesn't matter how hard, but harder acceleration = more audible sound).

It sounds like a really light metal sound, or air escaping - there is no screeching/ metal on metal sound/ vibration / noticeable knocking/ticking / etc
I checked the heat shield, seemed fine - also checked for holes, didn't see anything (but car was pretty warm, so couldn't wrap my hands around/ etc - just visible check.

Any other ideas for things I should be looking at or checking? If I can't find anything, I'll of course take it to someone I know. I just prefer knowing what the problem is myself and fixing it myself if I can.

Thanks for the help :)

Could be a vacuum leak.

Get a cigar blow it into your intake . If there is a leak you will see where the smoke escapes.
