Once again, summer is upon us, and once again, the car is running hot.

Gonna be changing the thermostat out, since it's a cheap fix, but... I got to thinking about it, and it seems like I'm changing the thermostat every summer.

Is that common? I've had this car for over a decade now, so I honestly can't remember if I had to change the thermostat that often previously, when it was newer.

I've got a hair over 370 on the clock now, so I expect a certain amount of upkeep over a new car, but didn't know if anyone else experienced anything like this or not.

A thermostat isn't exactly a wear item. It should last 5 years minimum if not indefinitely.

yeah..... the thermostat shouldnt be wearing out... i would suspect it still works, pull it out and boil it, see if it opens

i have a feeling your issue is elsewhere

when was the last time you did water pump/timing chain or belt?

Pressure check the system while you are at it.

You can also safely run 75/25 water/coolant in the summer. The higher the ratio of water to coolant the more efficiently the liquid removes heat. The boiling point will be lower but it will cool better. I run a bottle of water wetter and distilled water in my corvette with no antifreeze to keep it cool in the summer. It's 101°F right now.

Yea I would say you should not have to be replacing the tstat that often no matter the mileage. As said before, when was the last time you did the water pump? Also check the radiator, even if it's not leaking it could still be bad and gummed up. Also when was the last time you've done a coolant flush? And I mean an actual flush, not just emptying the rad and reservoir and refilling.

Hm. Last time I did the timing belt was... maybe around 100k ago? It's also been a hot minute (no pun intended) since I've changed the water pump.

For the time being, the car is ticking along again with the new thermostat put in, but I'll definitely take your guys' suggestions to heart. Thanks peeps. :)

if you have dexcool that shit starts sludging bad after a while. a complete cooling system flush would be a good idea. you could possibly have it building up at the bottom of the radiator or something cutting your coolant flow down but not all the way off making your car run hotter.
