Got a `97 grand am on the way out (infamous trans problems, extensive frame rust, other minor issues). I could fix it, but for a bit more I could just buy a new, better condition car.
This I would be looking for:
* Fits 4+ people comfortably
* Good trunk space, I carry a lot of stuff places
* Good mileage (I do a lot of driving)
* Easy to work on (Will be doing 90% of my own work on the car)
* Sedan
* Reliability

Budget will be about 5k, but as a college student, less is always better.

I've considered it because they are a fun and spacious car, but they get ass for mileage if I'm not mistaken.

I personally enjoyed my 2004 Impala SS I had. Impala's are known for their large trunks.

My 2004, I bought with 100k miles, I put additional 70k miles on it and had no major issues with the car. It had a 3.8 Supercharged V6 motor.

Only reason I got rid of it is because I hit a deer with it, ended up replacing it with a 2014 Impala LTZ.

This. Buy a nice one for $3k save the rest for gas and oil. I paid $1000 for my 99 I drive back and forth to work. It has 3.55 gears and I drive the shit out of it 18-22mpg and 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles. It rides like a couch, seats 5 adults, has a trunk big enough for 4, maybe 5 dead hookers, and has really cheap parts. The 4.6 is a bit of a pain to work on at times but it's really tough.

Cruising on the interstate at 90. The speedo is off from the swapped rear end.

I would say this should suit all your needs. Plus this thing gets killer gas mileage, and it only costs about 50 bucks at your local walmart.

Glad to help bud
