Rebuilding a 1972 Evinrude 9.5hp....seems to be in pretty solid shape, mostly replacing gaskets where needed and doing a rebuild on the carb and fuel pump, possibly the water pump

Also just picked up an 1956 Evinrude 7.5hp Sportwin for $20....lower unit is in very rough shape and the cowl needs TLC at the least, but the motor inside seems to be in surprising good shape, and the pistons aren't seized, not sure what I am going to do with it yet but motor + tank for $20 is hard to pass up

Nobody?

Rebuilt the fuel pump, rebuilt the starter (basically, just replacing the spindle), and replaced a gasket in the carb (decided to hold off on the rebuild until I see how it runs, so many tiny parts)

I also rebuilt the throttle handle and greased all the fittings....just got the primer hose for it in the mail today, just have to get a tank and mix some 2-cycle and I am set to give it a try

I fucks with 2 strokes.

That motor will probably outlive you. They are fairly basic.

Sounds like she will pop once you give it some fuel.

Tried it today and no dice, guy I bought it from said it would run on starter fluid, figured it was the pump and rebuilt that, next is probably rebuilding the carb...

Main problem now is I was checking spark and somehow managed to torque out the threads on one of the spark plug sockets using only 8 ft/lb of pressure...well shit...Guess my next project is to get a helicoil and fix that stupid problem, and while I wait for that to get here I am probably going to (At the least) clean out the carb, and probably do a full rebuild (I have the kit)

Compression seemed good when just putting a finger over the plug holes, could feel significant push and pull (the guy I bought it from said it tested well)

With the upcoming cost of a heli-coil ($30) and the tank I got today,($30 worth of firewroks) plus new hose and connector, ($20) fuel pump ($10.50) and carb rebuild kits, ($25) new synthetic gear oil, ($5), new thermostat ($11.50) and replacing the starter spindle ($30) I am in it for around $150 in parts and accessories and $75 for the motor...certainly a bit more than I was looking to spend but should be worth more than that when it is running....

I'd rather pull it apart and tap it to the next size up then helicoil but that's just me

Why were you torquing a spark plug on that anyway

I have only ever torqued plugs on race motors

could you ever get it to run on starter fluid yourself?

you could also manually fill the carb to see if it is acting properly.

Probably the float is stuck, or a jet is blocked.

Sucks about the threads. I've have major success with helicoils, as well as MAJOR failures.

Best of luck

Card filled fine from the primer, fuel pump let out a drop of fuel then sealed up....I tried dribbling a bit directly into the carb and still nothing, best I got was one thin puff of smoke (not even a cough)

I checked spark earlier today, I got one weak spark, so I pulled the flywheel, while everything looks quite old (IE, fabric wires and such) it all seems to be in solid shape, nothing cracked, corroded, or discolored....it may be the condensers but I am not sure how to check that..highly likely that replacing the plugs and the wires will be a world of help, but before I do that I hope to tune up the points and see if I cant get a stronger spark...read somewhere that moving from a J4C to a J6C plug will help on an older motor as it sparks hotter...not sure the truth in that

I have the helicoil on order and I have some good RTV (Red and black, high temp and high temp oil resistant) to install the coil with

It very well could be a clogged jet, but the spark isn't fantastic either...one of my next moves may be to either just rebuild the carb, or hit it with B-12 and see if that works

The heli comes with a tap, the threads are still slightly intact, I can even get the plug decently tight, but under full throttle I have no faith in the 1-2 remaining threads so I will do the fix...I don't want to pull the head to do this as I would then have to buy a gasket...which isn't cheap on a 40+ year old motor with lots of discount. parts

I always torque my plugs to spec....on my vehicles it has never been a problem, but apparently this one was just a little too weak and so there you have it....

I have a tube of the red stuff and a tube of the black stuff, I believe red is high temp and the black is oil resistant

Took the head off, the gasket was in surprisingly good shape and came off in one shot, so I re-used it with a thin layer of high temp RTV just to fill the gaps....Tapping went well and the new Helicoil is in place, very easy to do and seems very solid

Since I took the head off I cleaned off the piston heads and removed a ton of carbon build up and varnish from the head itself...

Re-set the points using a multimeter and if I did it right then all is perfectly set now

Going to rebuild the carb tomorrow and clean the jet...seems likely that it is plugged so I may as well just get it over with while I am tuning the rest

Blow-torched the spark plugs to clean em up, results seem to be pretty solid...re-gapped and ready to install

Hoping I don't have to replace spark plug wires, seems like a pain in the asss

2nd project is a 1956 Evinrude, not doing much with the motor yet (looks like it sat in salt water for a long time) but the tank is nearly ready to go...de-rusted the inside with vinegar to good results but trying to prevent flash rust and it is tricky
