Model: Cobalt
Make: Chevy
Year: 2007
engine/transmission option: 2.2 liter ecotec/ automatic
are you mechanically inclined/have the right tools?: me somewhat, friends yes.
Issue(s): diesel instead of gas in tank

What should I check or clean out to get the diesel out of my fuel system?
I drove maybe 20 miles before my car crapped out on me.

firstly, thank you for using the sticky instructions!
wat i would do is:
1- unplug the fuel line that goes to the injectors, route it into a bucket. ( maybe youl need to use a funel with some tubing to make it work properly)

2-once the bucket it is set up you switch the key to on position it will make the pump run for 1-3 seconds. repeat until empty. I hope you didnt fill it up completely cuz this way will take for ever.( make sure you have enought buckets also lol)

or 3- you find a way to power the fuel pump with a constant current and make it run until your tank is empty.

4-run your car with gas and maybe throw in some sort of fuel system cleaner additive in it for the next 2-3 fill ups.

You're gonna want new plugs on top of the following. Yours are now caked in shit.

Rather than powering the pump just disconnect the line running into the tank and drain it with gravity.

Then add 1 gal of gas to the tank and do what blue and white said in step 1-2. That way the gas will help flush out the diesel in the lines.

You're also going to need a new fuel filter.

P.S. How bad did the car smoke? I can't believe you made it 20 miles...

Right, lol.
20 miles is pretty good mileage on diesel in a gasser, lmao.
How was it running before it took a shit ?
At least you didn't put gas in a diesel that's way worse xD
Check your injectors, replace your plugs, get new fuel filter.
Siphon as much as you can out. Can shove hose down into tank and use hand pump as well.
I wouldn't hook pump to continuous source while pumping it out. Wouldn't use the fuel pump at all. (Until I needed to to remove diesel from the lines. There's a small strainer on the fuel pump and there's no need to clog it up with whatever is in the dark depths of your tank :) (Unlikely to happen but I've seen it)
Also, taking the tank off would be best route. You can have it cleaned if you're anal about shit like me.
One last tip- don't try starting the car I think this is obvious but you never know. Diesel wont ignite in your cylinders and could get to hot exhaust system and start fires.

There was a recall on a fuel tank issue for these cars. If you're still under warranty / can take to dealership- I would have that checked out as well. So check if your model year has any recalls for fuel related issues.

Towed my car to an engine savvy friend's house.

Dropped and drained tank after removing the fuel pump.
Removed spark plugs.
Removed fuel rail and injectors.
Blew fuel line clear with mouth.

The diesel I put in was in a gas can at my brothers house. There were 2 identical ones and I obviously grabbed the wrong one.

Ran like shit, I'd hit the accelerator and it would studder then eventually take off after like 3-5 seconds.
Before the diesel it ran just fine.

My check engine light came on and was constantly flashing.
There was a screeching coming from my engine.
Top speed was reduced to 75mph, then 50mph after making a u-turn.
Once I pulled over and shut the car off it wouldn't start back up.

Already took care of the fuel pump recall for my car because I started to smell gas all the time inside and outside of the car when driving and parked.

green pump here where i live is gasoline.. and yellow is diesel lol

but ive seen them different colors also... best way to make sure is to read it before putting it into your tank cause the diesel pump's and gas pumps are together

some stores the diesel pumps are seperate located at the back of the store's and thats how it should be honestly
