upon breaking...especially as the car is coming to a complete stop, there is a grinding that is reasonably audible and a slight vibration coming from the rear left tire area, ...under normal driving, no sounds or grinding

Calipers or pads perhaps?

also is it simple enough for one man to change his brake?
