I prefer honda but is there a bike that is both fuel injected AND electric start? I don't know much about dirt bikes, never had one so this would be my first. All I see is carb'd and kick starts or a combination with either fuel injected or electric start. The only other thing would be it needs to be bigger than a 250. Running a cbr600rr so I can handle the cc's unless they aren't really an issue when it comes to light trailing or tracks if I ever got into that.

if you never rode on dirt, it wont matter what cc's you have, a 250 will knock you down on your ass. Just research if your state allows you to plate non legal dirt bikes. It'll be better than buying a factory dual sport.

Street does not convert to dirt. Don't get a big powerful bike to start. I would get a 250 4 stroke. Wr Yamaha 250 are pretty good.

Also what is your budget? There is definitely FI estart bikes. Didn't see you want dual Sport if you are looking to ride on pavement and dirt you will eat tires for breakfast... not really worth it. Better to have two bikes.

dirtbike tires are cheap, but i only ran dunlop geomax 51's on my 250. They had decent life on the street and dirt combined, even when aired down to 12psi

Depends which ones you run and how hard you ride. I eat tires for breakfast. $100-180 Canadian depending on what ones.
