So I go to look at the crank sensor on my 1999 ford Taurus sho and I see the 2 wires power and signal are intact but there's freyed wires coming off of it. there's only 2 spots in the connector where does this get grounded to or what is it? I'm not good with wiring.

Hey sup,

I'm not very good with cars but I can try my best to help.

Is this wire a insulated wire ? What color is it ?

This could be a ground but normally it would run the connector and grab an internal ground of this sensor casing.

It could also be a "shield" if the sensor signal is like a 4-20mA and a shield is normally only connected to one side (let's say PLC) so probably connected in computer.

Let me know.

hey thanks for responding I figured out what it is it doesn't connect to anything actually i'm not sure of the purpose but it basically runs along with the other two and folds over at the end and that's it. not sure why I found from another wiring harness.

In this case it's more than probably a spair wire !

Anyway good to hear that it's "fixed" hehe

The picture is horrible. but if that connection has been unmodified I'd say that looks like shielding wire.

It doesn't serve any purpose, other than protecting that particular circuit from EFI/RFI (interference) from other electrical components.

EDIT: didn't read "crank sensor" in the first post.

Definitely shielding wire. VR sensors are finicky.

yes sounds about right sorry about the picture. By the way if this "shielding wire" is exposed to the elements will this effect the system?

Short term - no

Long term - possibly, but still doubtful

If it were me, I'd just cut any of the exposed shielding off, and put a drop of liquid electrical tape on the area.

That would prevent the shielding from unwraveling/degrading any further, should that be an issue.

I just tucked it tightly back up into the harness. put loom then wrapped it all electric tape. I also cleaned the connector and wires and put dialectical grease on it

You're good to go. That's usually what they do from the factory.
