1998 Ram 5.9 magnum automatic trans

It wasn't too long ago that I started experiencing weird shifting issues.. first and second were smooth but to get it into third it would have to run at an upwards of 5000+ RPM. Unless cold, then it would shift around 3500-4000

Tonight I was out, just playing with the gears seeing what I could find out as I had planned on tearing into it this week, and I manually downshifted to first, then up to second, and when I went to shift into drive, no dice.

I parked and eventually managed to get it into drive, but I can't get it into neutral, park, or reverse

Any advice on where to start as far as troubleshooting goes? Two weeks ago I checked the oil and it was fine. Still red, no burning smell. Thing is without being able to start it I can't get it in my garage to rip the pan off.

Yeah that's what I was leaning towards was the shift solenoid for 3rd, but this whole new issue with not being able to put it in park is messing with me.

Thanks for your input!

Been there done this shit....

With the 46 and 48re they all do the same shit. When you were experiencing late/ lag shifts the valve body wasn't getting enough pressure. This is casued by the weak pump that Chrysler put in these. When that happens it's really only a matter of time until you get to the point you just hit. Lack of gears and complete lockout. Aka even when the valve body builds enough pressure the bands and clutches are gone so it will NOT shift. The 46rfe usually locks in second and in some cases reverse. (which is really fucking handy)

If you are going to rebuild it yourself go ahead and upgrade to the following if you plan to keep it:

Heavier planetary set
New valve body (unless you want to practice this again in 15k miles, just spend the extra 100 bones and get a new one)

The planetary gears i Usually get from suncoast and the rest of the parts you need are all at sonnax. If you get the rebuild kit from sonnax be sure to get the tool kit, sprag bushing(you'll break the first one trying to put it on, trust me) and their second gear "super hold" kit. It dosn't hurt to get a bigger retainer kit for the pistons either.

This is awesome, thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

Whats my best bet to getting this thing in park or neutral to start it? I should hopefully have time this week to actually focus on it so I'd like to get it in the garage to thaw out.
