Basically been having a progressive problem with my '06 Pontiac G6.

A couple of months ago my check engine light came on, I took it by somewhere to have them plug a computer up to it, and they basically told me my catalytic converter was going bad. At the time it wasn't giving me much of an issue aside from the exhaust being a bit strong. Less than a month ago, the car started making a small rattling noise when sitting idle, usually after being ran for a bit. Today leaving for work, the car had some trouble accelerating, between 30-45 MPH range.
When I hit the interstate, the car struggled to even speed up to 75 MPH, and when I hit a hill it couldn't keep up with the acceleration. When accelerating, the RPMs would rise, but the car wouldn't accelerate. I stopped by a gas station to try and let the car cool down, and when I tried to leave the symptoms got even worse. By the time I made it home the car wouldn't take off from a complete stop without taking nearly half a minute to get up to 30 MPH, with the pedal to the floor. Sitting in idle, the car wont go past 4,000 RPMs.

TL;DR: Is still still a cause of the catalytic converter, or is it possible something else is causing an engine misfire? It almost feels as if the transmission is slipping as well, but I assumed it's from the acceleration issues.

I do plan on taking it to a shop soon to find out what's wrong with it, but would like to get a general idea before hand.

That R8 is HOT.

More than likely, if your catalytic converter is blocked it will get really hot. Often RED hot. If you can visually see the cat from under the vehicle (without it in the air) that would be a real easy first test to check on.

When the symptoms show, pull over. Visually inspect the cat, if it is glowing, that's your problem.

Cars need to be able to breathe. If they can't exhale (exhaust) they can't inhale.

Theoretically, would gutting it provide a temporary solution?

I don't get emission checks in my state, the only worry would be how loud the exhaust would be.

wont be all that much louder, but it will most likely cause your fuel mileage to go down.

Gutting cats should not affect fuel mileage. If anything it should improve.

when my cats went it did make a rattly pinging sound. You could go to autoaoze if you dont have a OB2 scanner and if it says oxygen sensor a clogged cat will mess up an o2 sensor.
