i had a mechanic change my fuel line and my brake lines in my car. he gave me an estimate before the work was done and said it would cost 250.

he called me when it was done and charged me 475. 100 for parts and 375 for labor.

my question is did he overcharge me? this type of job doesnt seem like it should have costed so much. any mechanics opinions or help is appreciated. thanks for taking the time.

yeah, 5 hours labor for that job is insane, it's not your fault he was incompitent and couldn't get a job done in the correct amount of time. If you paid with credit card dispute that shit

Just the rubber lines? At $80/hr it could easily have been $320 in labor.

Parts is fine for a shop I guess. Marked up 30% atleast but isn't much here. Idk

what car and labor rate? Seems a bit excessive imo... From the states or Canada?

If they are replacing the metal lines on all four corners it could easily be that much, with parts and labor.

Replacing lines on the car is a pain in the ass. Doing it properly can take some time.

This is made exponentially worse if the car is rusty. Shops factor that into estimates as well. If they think they will break it on the way out, they will add it to the invoice estimate.

this, running and shaping all new lines isn't a fun task, not hard but very annoying. And if he replaced all the metal brake lines I don't think he raped you but he didn't give you a hell of a deal

And IMO don't complain if you took it to a shop you could have done it yourself and saved money, should have thought about that before :p

Anytime I have a shop perform work I always anticipate the actual price to be higher than the quote, unless I'm taking it to a dealership and know what all they will be performing
