They're all pretty much the same, there isn't one that outright beats the other. My preference is yamaha. 2 stroke needs mixed gas and has a powerband at the top end for its peak performance. 2 stroke requires alot of maintenance and rebuilds. I prefer 4 stroke. Straight gas, power is there whenever you need it, low end, top end or whenever. Doesn't nearly require as much maintenance as a two stroke.

4 stroke will cost you like 4 grand when it blows up. Sure it's more reliable.
2 stoke will cost you less than a grand at a shop. Mix your gas right and it will last years of jist regular riding. If you race expect rebuilds every few races.

I rode my yz450f for 5 years without one problem while my friends were rebuilding their 2 strokes every other year if not every other. You're right, it will cost more but it will all add up in the long run. Way more reliable. Dont have to worry about you're bike not starting every time you're out with your friends

A week end rider, casual rides, pits, trails. There's no reason that motor shouldn't last years. I mean the entire rotating assembly is considered a wear item yes. Mix that gas right and you will be fine.
or, option b ( and this is all jist IMO) buy a brand new 4 stroke so you know the shape its in. Buying a used 4 stroke could cost you ridiculous amounts of money. Buying a used 2 stroke, rebuild just for the hell of it, only cost you a few bucks and it's good to go.

The low end torque of a good 4 stroke is awesome, I'll be the first to say that np.
the 2 stroke is a squirlly basturd, fun as hell, but you got to know how to operate one.

i like 2 strokes easy rebuild did my first bike rebuild myself with no experience in small motors no problems at all

But as far as brands I prefer a yz or a kx the suspension feels nicer to me

I've never rode a KTM but I heard they rly nice

Get a 250kx or 250yz it's plenty of bike and they are fairly cheap or a 125 if you never rode one before a 250 might be a little to much bike
