I don't have much knowledge but I have an automatic Mazda 3 and when it changes from 1st to 2nd gear I feel the car lurching. Anyone know why this might be the case?

Try smashing it from D to R and back to D really quickly while driving

Do you drive it hard pretty often? Take off from lights like a race car driver?

The manual for my suburban literally states that this is normal during hard acceleration, the hard shifting is meant to protect the transmission, as crazy as that sounds

over time (in newer cars at least) your transmission will adapt to your driving style, and if you drive it hard all the time it will shift as if you are even when you aren't

You can take it into the dealership and they can reset shift adaptions pretty easily and it will basically reset it, I had the same thing happen in my impala and in my cruze because I drive like a madman about 70% of the time (ok, maybe 85%)

You raaaaaaang?

to op: 1st. check tranny fluid.
Is it low or black and smells burnt? If No: continue below

Do you still have reverse? If yes: then don't worry about a lurching tranny. Cars are weird sometimes. I'm assuming its an older Mazda out of warranty.
