Before starting, I want you guys to know that my knowledge is limited about quads and these kinds of motors

I have this 1985 Yamaha Tri-Z 250 that was at my cottage and I decided to bring it at my house to try and get it to work. It is in really good condition. We had two of them and the one I have right now, we practicly never used it.

Last time I tried to start it, I noticed somethig was wrong with the clutch.

If I put it in neutral, I can push it around (obv)
If I put it in gear and pull the clutch, I can't push it around (seems like it stays in gear and does not release)
If I follow the gear cable all the way to the " gear box ", I can see that the cable pulls the mechanism down there. From the handle to the motor, the cable is obviously not snapped.

What can be wrong ? Is it possible that the cable is broken inside ? Last year, some fuckers tried to steal it from my garage at my cottage and they pushed it on 30 yards and left it there (While it was in gear because I could see the tracks from dragging/pushing it in the grass LOL). Is it possible that something fucked up inside from them doing that ? I used to start it by pulling it and dropping it in gear when kickstarting wouldnt do the job.

Anyways, I might post a video if you guys want to see what I'm talking about. I would really like to fix it and ride it

Thanks

Well if its rolling in neutral you probably don't have anything seized up. If you can see that the cable is pulling that lever on the case then the cable isn't broken (doesn't mean it isnt worn though, but that wouldn't cause your problem unless the cable isn't pulling that lever far enough to engage the clutches). My guess is your clutches are probably just worn out. Try adjusting the clutch cable a bit and see if its not just too loose.

pulling the lever won't always make it mobile when in gear.. The way some of them are designed.

My dirt bike if I put it in first, pull the never, I can't push it. Don't think any of my bikes were able to do this... When it's running though this will work. Or if comming to a stop and pulling the lever in it works.

If this makes sense to you? Get it running first before you do anything. If it won't start, pull the plug, dump a little gas in the cylinder, put plug back in and kick it over.

Btw, imo don't take advice from the guy thats talking about the clutch "engaging" when you pull the lever. It "disengages" . The clutch is engaged until you pull the lever.

Yeah I was comparing to a car. That's what I meant when I said my knowledge is very limited. Thanks !
