Im looking at a 99 Drop Top, 6 Speed like 50k Miles
Their Asking $17,990 on it, I live in Illinois.
What are the main things I should look for on it? The Top looks fine. Body is great, exhaust is very quite which sucks. He said its aftermarket, but maybe Tips lol. It sounded soft.
Seemed to Shift pretty well, but I didn't push it past maybe 4500 RPM. The Country Road I chose has 2 Cops on it, what luck.....
No Lights on inside.
They had duck Tape on the Visors, he said trust me, youll thank me for it. Saying the fall down on the sides all the time.
How often do you guys shift 1-4??? Ive never done it unless on accident before, but I see they have a light for it, and sounded like if you use it, it slides into 4 instead of 2. Is that true?
I prefer the Removable Top (Targa?) over the Rag Top, but I like black over silver 100% more. Just sucks the black is rag, and silver is removable. Are their any differences in here, like reliability, maintenance on the tops. Rag breaks down, or the others leak? I have seen several with fade issues on the removable.
Kind of a dumb question, when your just cruising or going out to dinner, what speed do you normally shift into second gear at? I don't know if I was being a little bitch and didn't want to floor it with the sales man with me, but I kept shifting it early and didn't like the way the car felt. Just trying to see if its me being nervous with him, and if I buy it ill be fine. I would usually shift at like 20 mph into second, should I wait to hit like 30/35 (3000rpm+)??
Do they have decent Stereos in them? Only had the Radio on, but was a very cheap speaker sound. Definitely would need to upgrade the sound system. Any advice on 12s for the back?
I had an 05 Mustang GT, then sold that for an Audi TT (For the AWD, dumb) and looking at this. I feel like its a deeper clutch than the Audi but not sure if again its just me. I tend to overthink things when Im not familiar or nervous.
$17,900 is Z06 money. That is way overpriced even for the mileage.
Exhaust is easily fixed, there are lots of options.
Look for engine, abs, or traction system lights on the dash. There are some common problems with the stability management that will cause errors. Other than that it is typical used car stuff.
The visors sound broken.
The interior lighting circuit must have a short or something
The skip shift is easily bypassed. It is for fuel economy. I hate it. It only unlocks 2nd gear over a certain rpm.
Yes there are more maintenance concerns with a removable top or convertible than a hard top. The vette has no more or less than any other in that regard.
I shift my cars around 2000rpm and they have the same engine/gearing. It is going to feel a little sluggish down that low. The power is at 3500-5500rpm in that car when stock. It should still motor about just fine.
The stereo was mediocre back in 2000. Put 1 10" sub in it and let it ride. A 12" or multiple 12" subs are overkill. If the clutch engages pretty low in the stroke that is a good sign the clutch is in good shape. They have a pretty good hydraulic setup from the factory.
