Ive been throwing around the idea of a 240/260/280Z for a while now but there is one thing I havent figured out.
I know there are a bit of differences between the 280 and 240. I love the look of the 240 (aka no ugly bumpers) but I like the idea of a newer 280 as that saves $$ and has potentially less rust problems.
Can the 280 be redone to look more like the 240? Is it just a matter of removing the bumpers and replacing them? If not, is it an expensive/complicated conversion?

I dont have a lot of space to work on a car currently, so buying a running 280Z and slowly modding it would be much easier to do than finding a 240 that needs work.

Yes a 280 can very easily look practically identical to a 240. Only real noticeable difference is the tail lights (those can be changed to 240z as well)

Remove the park bench bumpers, use 240z brackets and bumpers, they bolt right up.

For your goals, I'd definitely recommend a 280, for a few different reasons.

-They came fuel injected, so the fuel system is already updated should you want to engine swap.

-The 280 came with a r200 rear end. The 240 has an r180. The R200 is much much stronger.

-They are much cheaper than a 240...especially as of late.

Basically, the 240 has the history/heritage and looks people want (it was also the lightest around 2300lbs vs the 280 at 2800). However the drivetrain of the 280 was superior.... So lots of people either make 280s look like 240s, or they make their 240 drive like a 280 (swapping 2.8l engine and drivetrain).

The vast majority of major parts will bolt up to either chassis, no problem.

If you, or anyone, wants an s30...the time is now. Things are happening and the 240z is appreciating like maad. In the last 2-3 years it has appreciated over 195%. It's currently one of the top fastest appreciating cars.

Until they become unobtainium....

Especially since the 432 Fairlady sold for $253,000. Prices have snowballed in the past four months. I now frequently see cars asking 30-60 grand now...The trend seems to only be gaining strength. Not so good for potential buyers/parts horders (like me).

I'm just glad I have a couple.

Do it, you've wanted a Z this long, if that hasn't changed yet, I'd go for it.

Typically people think it is a cool car, want one for a small amount of time, then move on.

If you're still thinking you'd like one, after all this time..... Then yeah, it's the right car for you.

But I honestly can't stress enough that there won't be too much longer where these cars are easily attainable, based on what's trending..

That is by no means an excuse to go run out and buy some rusted ass piece of shit.

Buy the right car and it will be an investment. Just be diligent, as time is ticking :)

When I wrote "Z Experts", thats what I meant!
I just didnt remember his full account name...

I do like the cool factor of a 240 over the 280, but I think the 280 would be far more practical and way less work in the immediate term (which is good considering I dont have the space for a big overhaul)
If I can talk myself into selling my Mustang, perhaps Ill pick one up pretty soon.
