My car was recently totalled in an accident and so I am purchasing a used car from Craig's list!
The car I was looking at costs $900, it is a 2002 Jaguar X-type 2.5L.
The blurb attached is as follows:

"Selling my green 2002 Jaguar X-Type 2,5l. Good on gas for AWD. Car has 136,187 miles. Car needs transmission otherwise it is in good condition. Cosmetics are good for a 10+ year car. AWD is awesome in the snow and rain, handled this past winter with no problems. You buy as is, any questions I'll be more than happy to answer. Text is the best way to get in touch but you can call.

side note: car does have jaguar emblem on hood and jaguar caps on wheels are all there too. full spare tire too."

After inquiring the seller as to how immediately it needs a new transmission, they said:
"The car runs but it can't drive a far distance. It doesn't go in reverse and when going forwards it will sometimes stay in first gear or drops down to first gear, it slips, and it kicks. It needs a transmission"

How much money do you think I would be putting into this car to get it fixed up? How much is a transmission for this car? How much would it cost to insure this car a year (no previous insurance policies)?

PLEASE HELP :O

Think that's accurate? O.O Ebay has better prices on transmissions, but then what would I pay for labor? Do mechanics even do simply labor or are they going to pin a list of extra things I need with that transmission?

don't even give the guy the time of day... 2000s jags were shit.. The xType had a slew of issues, everything is expensive to fix.. They stated that the trans is fucking bombed, so they probably beat the shit out of it.. High milage british car, leaks oil.

Dont.. Do... It..

If I had $2,000 to play around with, what would you advise getting out of a used car?
What is the best I could get out of a used car now a day with $2k to spend

For fun? An old 80s Chevy Custom 4wd.. You'll sink money into it, but it's a nice little base

For reliabilty, Civic.

What are you looking for? Front wheel drive or rear wheel? How important is gas mileage? stick shift or auto?

e/ noticed you're in long island NY? I'd consider something awd, just for the winter months maybe. unless you're never effected by snow/ice.

Or for $400 bucks buy this truck and put an engine in it. Guarantee you can get a used chevy small block thrown in this truck for a lot less than tranny work on some y2k jag.
