so someone posted in donor forum about what to do regular maintenance on a 2000 camry with 260k miles on it. another user told him to drop the trans pan and fill back up with new atf. this started a discussion about whether new atf in such a high mileage vehicle is nearly a death sentence for the trans.

im just wondering what everyones opinion on the subject is here and what your reasoning is. also any first hand experience doing this and your results.

If old transmission fluid is really dark I'd drain some of the old and add new. i would not do a flush and change the filter,

Don't flush it at that mileage. Don't change fluid if it's already burnt. That's about it. If the fluid is decent it wont hurt to drop the pan and replace the sump fluid.

If it's been changed and flushed on a regular basis then sure, go ahead and do it.

If it's never been touched before. I wouldn't touch the fluid...

This.

I'd never recommend a trans service on a car with over 150k with no history of service.

E: Or replace with new fluid and saw dust

That's kind of questionable.. I think you'd be ok though personally.

That's not terrible. Check the service log and see if it's been serviced before.

That's around the range of my jeep, and I did a trans flush on it when I bought it "has around 10k miles".

I would flush that one.

It's when it looks brown and smells burnt that you need to just leave the shit in there.
