Penetrating Oils
Something to consider and try.
Penetrating Oils
“Machinist’s Workshop” recently published information on various penetrating oils. The mag reports they tested these products for “break out “torque” on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” bolt. Average torque load to loosen nut:

No Oil used ……………………516 foot pounds
WD-40 ………………… ……..238 foot pounds
PB Blaster …………………….214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ………………….127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil …………………….106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix…………………. 53 foot pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix is a “home brew” mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this “home brew” released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price.

read this article and thought i would pass it on. i dont much have to deal with rusted hardware but i know some of you do, and ive been using atf mix for years.

Cool info about the ATF mix. Kroil is some tough shit. We couldn't live without it here at work. It may be more expensive than the others but it definitely penetrates better. One squirt on a piece of all thread will run for days. This is a cool test but it only measures the break out torque.

Interesting, I'd of thought Kroil would be on top. That stuff fucking rocks.

I also like some stuff called "Break Free" it, too, is AMAZING.

I guess I need to start making my own...Thanks for posting.

Yeah that stuff works great, but I can't justify the cost, especially when our stuff out here isn't even that bad

We don't have terrible rust here either. We have shit here at work in the chemical plant that has been in the weather for 40-50 years. Insulation and moisture are a bad mix. As such i get kroil for $0/can.

That's how I did it. If PB blaster and heat didn't get it out the breaker bar would snap the head off or round it over.
