This is the one I am thinking of buying and below are the specs and price from Snap On

https://store.snapon.com/KRA2106A-Series-Roll-Cabs-Roll-Cab-Single-Bank-6-Drawers-Gloss-Black-P650739.aspx

Thoughts on it? I can get this set for $1200 bucks and 5 hours of driving.

I'm apprenticing for mechanics and figured this would be a great start to my tool collection that I already have.

The other thing is snap on stuff doesn't tend to lose its value very much so I could probably easily get my money back out of it when the time comes to get something bigger.

The driving doesn't bother me much at all. And I have scoured my area (within 100kms) and there hasn't been anything in a month and I want to get something that will last awhile.

Just starting? Buy a small toolbox.

That's a good price though, my co-worker bought his for 3800 a couple years back.
It's a good box.

Go pick up the black powder coated/textured Costco one. They've always been the best bang for the buck toolboxes. Not MAC or Snap-On, but still decent. And a fraction of the price.

Hell the red harbor freight combo box for like $350 is actually really nice for the price. I see guys with $10k boxes that hold tools just as well as a $1500 box. Spend money on the tools, not the box.

I actually have quite a few tools as it is and will be able to fill up quite a bit of this box, been working on cars and acquiring tools for a few years already.

The warranty is a big thing for me and resale value cause I did actually look at that costco one

Kind of this.

If you're going to just go invest in a roller, get a craftsman or a Pittsburgh.. 10 years down the road, when your sure this is what you'll be doing for the rest of your life, a Mr Big I guess wouldn't be out of the question..

They aren't necessarily a waste of money, but they really aren't necessary.. Shops insure your tools anyways, and that's usually why people buy those boxes, because they're safe.. Go spend 400 bucks on a nice craftsman roller first.

E: take it from me, I'd you ever wanted to sell the SnapOn box, it's not as easy as you'd think.. It's actually rather difficult to convince someone making 40k a year to spend 7k on a box, lol.

I always find what goes IN the box to be much more important than the receptical. But, it's all about the money though, if you've got the funds, that IS a decent price for that Snap On box. However, if you're starting a tool collection/amassing I could recommend way more useful tools for 1200 than the box that doesn't help anything other than providing a snazzy place to stick your screwdrivers. I agree with the sentiments above. That harbor freight 300 dollar box is pretty much the shit. Enough so that Jack Olsen (you may know his videos/garage) uses one. He just painted it to match his other boxes in his shop.

So yeah, my advice, if you've got money to burn, and most of your future tools already in hand, I'd say go for the box, they absolutely hold their value. But yeah, they can be hard to sell.. But...if you're looking to start a tool collection, or are still buying those bread and butter tools...wait on the box, and buy a few tools.

The best tool and investment, by far, is the one between your ears.
