first time posting in here, also my first car.
Ill try to keep this short as possible.
I bought a 2003 Dodge Neon (sx 2.0)
About after a month I started to notice a clunk, when slowing down around 40 km/h almost everytime.
I had my mechanic scan my car and was told the Transmission needed to be replaced.
I replaced the old Transmission With a newer Transmission with 70k on it
But I still felt the clunk after about a week when slowing down, just less frequent.
My Mechanic scanned again, but there is apparently no problems.
Filter has been replaced, proper fluid at proper levels and normal color
Apparently mechanic does not know what else the issue could be

I am a student so money is limited, which is why I tried turning to Jsp hah.
Does anyone know what else could be a cause? could this even be a transmission issue still?
Car only has 130k original

Dont know if this matters, but my mechanic is also a buddy of mine, so i dont think he would screw me around.

Any insight/inquiries would be greatly appreciated as i am starting to feel desperate

Thanks in advance!

You need a new mechanic.

Let me teach you diag.

Does the sound favor a particular side?
I assume it's when you're braking?
Check if it does it in reverse
Does it make the sound the entire time you're slowing down?

Could be a lot of things... Have your mechanic check your calipers to see if your pads are floating, check your ball joints, tie rod ends really any suspension component. Also, take a look at your trans axle, see if you see a lot of greese or exposed bearings OR a torn cv boot.. it doesn't sound like a direct issue with your transmission imo.

It's not really a sound. It's more a feeling. Like the car will jerk as soon as needle hits 40. Never when accelerating though

It occurs when I slow down past 40. I could be braking or just slowing down slowly. Never when I accelerate just as soon as my needle hits 40. When slowing down only.

There is just the quick jerk in the car as soon as 40 is hit. It won't last the entire time slowing down.
I don't really. Notice any sound. Just the jerk and it doesn't seem to be on a set side.
Sorry I should have been a little more specific. Haha.

Still sounds like a trans axle to me. Take a quick look at that and your cv boot and see if there is any visible damage.

Either way, I'd go take it to a more credible mechanic and pay for the diag. If it turns out to be the trans, go after the mechanic that did the last install.

Okay. I probably do this asap.
Thanks for your help buddy. You've given me some insight towards this. I'll keep us updated

Even when replacing tranmissions, they never come with solenoids and valve bodies. These might also have to be replaced.

Turns out mechanic forgot to reset tranny memory. Hasn't skipped at all and been about a week. Thanks for the help!
