A few of you know that I have been on a "bid list" since the release of the hellcat came public to dealers.

What happens is that anyone that wants one gets put on a list through a dealership (I use northwest dodge in Houston as they have the biggest inventory promised locally) When a car hits the train and is scheduled for delivery the bidding begins at MSRP and goes up.

The first car went for over 100k, the exact number I dont know. It's a silent bid process... and 100k was my number when I was really excited about these. after the first car went to another buyer I figured i better just sit tight and wait for a decent price.

Since then, I've held my bid at 70,300 for the last 6 cars. Still yet to get one. The now owner of the last car sold is a part of SCLX (Spacecity LX Modern Mopar) and I was talking with him after he got his from the same dealership. He got his for 72,001.

My plan is to grab a hellcat for my comfort price to replace my SRT8. The srt8 will be built into my drag car (street legal but trailer queened) and be my new toy since I am out of the diesel game myself. I did get to finally drive a hellcat that the manufacture brought down for our car group this week. It was an automatic but still a very fun car and actually rides much much better than my '13. There was 5 of us that tracked the car at strip and the best we could get was 11.7 @ 121mph with the red key. It was on the slow side for production numbers but the track was not prepped very well and it was cold out... Still very fun none-the-less.

Holy shit.. you were about to throw $30K down the drain to own one?

They must have zapped you with some brain washing software when you watched a commercial at the dealership or something

100k at the time was not a bad price considering they were going for 115-130k each. I could have bought it for 100k and flipped it before I even turned the key and made 20k. Now, that easy money potential is not there anymore since there are more and more of them being sent in every month. So yes, I would have spent 100k to make 20k in profit.
For the other half and to be more up to date, yes, I will spend 8k over msrp on a hellcat. I look at it this way. I can spend 70k on a new diesel and dump another 25-30 into it to get it where I like diesel trucks to be or I can spend 70k on a new hellcat and pay 4k for new wheels and a set of drag radials and be happy with it all around.

Times are changing my man. 70k really isn't that much for a vehicle anymore... 8 years ago I almost cried when I payed almost 35k for a loaded half ton. Now a fully loaded half ton is almost as expensive as a loaded diesel.. 60k for a half ton truck... Thats some shit

I am not talking about $70K being alot for a vehicle I am talking about you literally throwing thousands down the drain. If they were selling for $115-130k how did you plan on snagging one at $100K and making an ez $20K? Sounds far fetched to me.

And even at $8K over msrp you will be out around $20K in deprecation after the first year. Pretty sound buy if you ask me

$20K down the drain for what.. to say you had a hellcat the year it came out? Call me crazy but id have to be making $500K+ a year to throw that much money down the drain on a car that people will forget a year from now.

Personal preference. I wasn't expecting to get the car. I was prepared to get it though. Think about it. If you had 100k in your pocket and you knew you could spend it today and make 120k tomorrow on that money. Wouldn't you?
I'm not buying a hellcat to make money on at 70k lol. I know just as much as anyone else the value of the car as soon as I buy it. If i wanted to keep the value in it high I wouldn't daily drive it lol. I'm not rich by any means but money isn't my biggest worry in life. I live comfortably. If i wasn't prepared to lose every cent of that 70,000 dollars I wouldn't buy one.

I've been this way ever since day one. There are vehicles I buy to make money from and there are vehicles I buy because i simply want it. If the want is greater than the monetary value involved, I buy it.

I hear ya but ya its definitely personal preference. I live pretty comfortably also and I have never dreamed about loosing $20K in deprecation just to be "the first one on the block" with X car.. it just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe you make a ton more $$ then me or we just have different views on things altogether. Either way its your $$ and at the end of the day if it makes you happy even for a little while do what you like

Btw looks like a lease would be the best of both worlds if you just couldn't live without being the first one to have one and not wanting to get bent over by depreciation etc.

I guarantee you can't lease one of these lol. If you could the price per month would be astro-fucking-nomical

Chrysler is only making (roughly) 300/month of the hellcats. There are 80 people on a list willing to pay MSRP or over MSRP just at 1 dealership in Houston. I don't think these will be out to lease until supply is greater than demand which wont be for a long time unless they kick up production like crazy.

There are much better cars out there for similar money. It's just this is dodge's first big hit in a long long time and the hype behind this one is big and has a lot of followers. They've done an excellent job marketing this car and the price they have for MSRP is low enough to make it a reality for a lot of people.

What color are you looking to scoop up? (Do they come in any color than black?)

They come in all the standard colors for challengers. For 2015 they brought back Sub lime green and torch red.

I would love to get my hands on a sub lime car. Then it would match the 71 super bee and get me motivated to restoring it ;) (or hiring old andy to come work at my house for the next 3 years :P )

Edit -- to clarify, the dealerships really don't get much say in what car they get. They are more than happy to get any hellcat regardless of the options. Surprisingly, all but 1 car sent to houston has been a 6 speed. Fingers crossed they keep coming that way.
