Ive been looking around at 97+ corvettes for a little while now. Trying to find one that looks good and priced fair. Most seem to be in the $14k-$19k Range on C5 Manual and $21k+ on C6 Manual.

I found a 2000 with a bad trans for $8000. I wouldn't pay that price, but what other things should I look for on the car that might be messed up. This is the exert from the listing "This car has a bad transmission. It has had previous paint work and the engine starts and runs fine. The Corvette is not in driving condition and would need to be trailered or towed out of the dealer. Again, the transmission is broken and will need to be replaced. When in neutral and letting out the clutch the car tries to lunge forward like it is in gear but does not want to move. With the clutch pushed in it does roll. That is all I can tell you on the transmission deal.. Come and get it... This Vehicle has less than 76k miles** "

Trying to see ideas from members who might know something on these cars. I spoke with a couple local shops, most say im talking $2500-$4000 for a new transmission.

is the add online? if so put the link.
are you planning to do the work yourself?
Planing to change my tranny myself i messed up 3rd gear synchro this summer on my Z06
you can get it rebuilt/upgraded for less then 2500 for sure.
4000$ gets you a tranzilla, make sure to change the clutch/bearing and such if you are taking out the tranny so calculate that into your cost.
then again you might just have a shifter issue

Heres the add. I would be paying to have the work done.

Even if the internals of the trans are completely trashed you can send yours in as a partial core and get a freshly rebuilt one for $2000. If the internals are ok with core exchange would be $1500. Factor in labor and $500ish for a nice clutch. You are looking at $2000-$3000 to have it done. MAKE SURE the trans is built by someone that specializes in T56's. There are a lot of little things that they can address for a little extra money that will make a big difference in the strength, life, and smoothness of the trans. Pulling the trans in a corvette is not very hard with a lift but it looks intimidating. It is a transaxle setup so the whole rear suspension cradle has to come out of the car. It's only 4 bolts though.

EDIT: Don't buy a stock clutch for it. It's not a bad clutch, but it won't hold more power than stock for very long. Monster clutches makes the best budget clutches on the market for LSX stuff. Their stage 1 and stage 2 clutches engage just like stock and will last a very long time while holding much more power and they are right at $500 with a flywheel. Make sure the slave cylinder is replaced with the clutch. You can get that from monster too. Keep the clutch fluid clean and pick up an MGW shifter and you are set! Tick Performance has rebuilt my T56 and 2 more that I have installed in F-bodies. We have had no issues out of our units and their shipping/customer service is top notch. You won't beat their prices either when comparing similar work.

The corvette trans is a bit more expensive to rebuild than an F-body trans because of the synchro setup. Prices have gone up too... They do a bit more than they used to do but I paid $1200 for my stage 2 rebuild 5 years ago and that included a 5-6 synchro assembly and slave cylinder. The stage 2 was advertised at $999.

I'm shocked a 15 year old Vette is over $10k.
