Mkay so I work in a smog infested city and I drive to work at a steel plant so luxury isn't what I'm after. I need a reliable car with good gas mileage. Also I live in Canada so it will have to deal with snow and cold etc. Basically looking to spend anywhere from 5k-~17.5k. I have never driven manual but I'm open to it. I like volkswagons. I'm not a big fan of North american cars. I like power. Not a ridiculous amount but right now I'm driving a neon so...................... yeah.

Also need tips on what to look for when buying used like what are some maintenance things I should check up on and what should I stay away from

Subaru Forester or Impreza will get you through any amount of snow that's in front of you. Get some good tires with that and icy roads won't be a problem at all either.
