Buying it new or used? If you buy it new, just get a Hyundai. They're generally a little cheaper than Toyota and Honda but have the 10 year/100k mil warranty. If used, they're all about the same. I personally have a 2000 Toyota Camry. Its almost 15 years old and still runs fine. If you're going to go that old though, I would stay away from Hyundai. They've come a long way in recent years, but they're really old models are still quite lacking.

Vw if you want something reliable and long lasting, get a tdi and drive it forever.

Just my biased opinion

in 05 i bought a hyundai accent brand new off the lot less than 100 miles on it for $4900us. still have the damn thing. its a trooper, light, great on gas mileage (about 24). at that cost tho it doesnt have AC or automatic anything. put in a after market audio system just cause that what i like. all told in the 9 years ive had the car ive spent ~1k between new brakes, clutch ect. and other expenses its cost me was 4 new sets of tires ( the old models eat through front tires =\ ) which i didnt include in the 1k maint ive spent. All in all its been worth the investment.

E/ another upside is its so friggen light i can push start it myself on flatland when my wife goes full retard and leave the head lights on overnight or i Sit idle too long listening to tunes

Go get a Toyota or an Honda. Those are the best if your want a Used car. Mazda are also worth looking but try to stick to Honda/Toyota.
