I know it's odd but I just got my first offer out of grad school that pays me a significant amount. After calculating my first 3 year expenses, I'll save around 33k a year for personal items. I've never purchased a vehicle straight from a dealer and as a fresh grad I am not certain of other expenses other than rent utility food gas insurance.

I've been thinking of buying a 40k car, is that reasonable?

Tell them what you want to pay punch them in the face if they dont agree with you.

Buy a nice gas saving DD and purchase a new car after you know what you have left month to month. Within 6 months you should have a good idea how things work.
