so last night i gave it a good wash, my question is for the guys that work on their own bikes. I want to service the chain today which includes cleaning and lube ( measuring "slack" )
shops around are closed for today as it is the long weekend otherwise I would just head over and ask but anyways what do you guys use for a cleaner & lube.

That's my personal favorite for the money. It doesn't sling off if you apply it right, it lasts a good amount of time, and it is fairly inexpensive. I'm not a fan of chain wax. Wax seems to collect more dirt and sand which rapes your chain.
If you want to spend a bit more money this is a great combo

Having a perfectly clean chain prior to lubing it makes a big difference. I only run O-ring chains myself. If you take care of a good O-ring chain they last forever. Certain lubes are not compatible and you don't want to use brake parts cleaner etc to clean one.
