Probably true considering he not only accidentally killed someone but also got crucified for days by the news over it.

IMO, this has to do with the pending investigation by law enforcement that could turn into a criminal case

Announcing retirement asap and saying how shook up he is makes him look all emotional about this incident. This could make him more sympathetic in the eyes of the people handling the investigation. It certainly looks better than if he continued on racing like nothing had happened.

When/if he's not in jeopardy of being charged, then he can always unretire.

Pretty sure they said no criminal charges would be filed, so I doubt it is due to a pending investigation potentially turning out to be criminal.

Its probably actually a false story and theres no pending charges but there could be some. They are still investigating
