Hey all,
I'm looking to buy a truck by the spring. I like GMC/Chevy appearance wise over ford and Dodge.
I don't know much when it comes to truck motors though. Are there years for each truck that I should avoid?
I can't afford a new truck - I'm looking to spend up to 15,000 for a used one.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

With 15K you are looking at a high mileage 07 or 08 with a few options if you don't need 4wd.

Or you can go back 1 body style and get an 05/06/07(classic) that is in good shape. At least 90% of the ones you find will have the same 5.3L V8. Stay away from the V6 if you find any. They aren't bad they just don't have any advantages over the 5.3. If you find a 6.0 truck they are just as good and make more power. They will use a little bit more fuel but it isn't terrible.

Is mileage really that big of a deal with trucks? What mileage should I stick under and how long does each truck last if maintained well.

The lowest mileage you can afford is best. Common wear items like the water pump, alternator, wheel bearings (4wd), and steering parts will need to be replaced somewhere between 130k miles and 200k miles on most stuff. One of these trucks will last a long, long time if you take care of it. If the maintenance is done exactly like they say it should be done one of these 5.3's will go well over 300k miles. The transmission will probably need a rebuild between 130k and 225k depending on how hot your environment is, how much you tow, how heavy your right foot is, and how well it was maintained.

With 15k in hand I would personally be looking at an 05-06 or an 07 classic (same body as 05-06) with as low of mileage as I could find with the options I want. The older the person you are buying from and the less signs of it being a work truck the better off you are.

I was in your boat a couple months ago with the same preferences but with $5,000 more to work with. I ended up scoring a 2007 Toyota Tundra double cab with only 72k miles on it for $18,000. Idk how you feel about the looks of tundras but they're great trucks. Id look into those if I were you.

I live in Maine so 4WD is almost necessary for winters. I really don't like the older style chevy...New 07/08 is my favorite. Maybe if I could do a headlight swap on the older style. I have been told by many people to avoid Dodge. Fords tend to look half decent most years but i'm told have engine troubles a lot...

If I were towing a lot then sure...but I would rather not spend the extra money on gas.

if my budget was 15k the last thing id look at is a diesel... of any brand. Even if the motor was good, the rest of the parts are going to eat you alive one dime at a time

If that's your budget and you need 4wd, sorry to be the bearer of bad news...but you're almost stuck with a small/mid size Ex: Tacoma/Colorado if you're looking at 07 or newer.

If you go 2000-2006, you can probably pick up a truck with 120k+ miles, but what's the point?
