Hey guys, probably been a year at least since my last visit to this subforum. When I posted here before I drove a 2nd gen 4runner. I've now decided to give the other side a shot. I bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 inline 6 4wd for $1000. It needs brakes u-joints and sway bar links to he road worthy, which I should have taken care of shortly.

I'm pretty excited about it honestly. Once the current tires wear out I'll probably look into going upward a bit with her.

Anyway, I'd like to know more about this vehicle's history. So I was wondering if any of you folks have a cardiac subscription and could run the vin for me... I'd rather not pay the 30 or 40 bucks for a single car report!

Any other jeep owners here?

I also own a 4.0

Not sure what you'd want to know, but the suspension and bodies will go waaay before the engine does.

If the motor runs and drives, and holds decent oil pressure (Mine is 40# at an idle), I wouldn't worry about the motor. Just keep the fluids topped off, and it will most likely outlast the body.

But definitely give the suspension, frame, and brake lines a GOOD once over. All of those components can get really soft over the years.

And yeah, carfax costs now. No matter who you are. And honestly, I never trust carfax.

The Good news you have a bad ass Jeep. The bad news you have a 2000.

How it sounds after Dodge bought Jeep and decided year 2000 would be the end of the XJ, 1999 and 2000 they made a shit ton of the Cherokee. They also changed foundries on who cast the block. You'll notice the block stamp 0331 on the last run. They supposedly are known for cracking.

That said- theirs a 2000 4x4 Cherokee sport (black) with that same 4.0 parked outside my window right now - knock on wood it runs great and is not abused.
I think it's like any used car, if was treated decent it'll last a long time. If ya run the piss out of anything you'll have problems.

to add- Jeeps are probably one of the safest vehicles you can own. Here's a picture of JD Bergman (former Ohio state wrestler) after rolling his Jeep six times in an accident this past weekend in NEO.

From what I read it is the 00 and 01 that have the 0331 casting that has been known to have problems. I found this out just hours after purchase. Oh well, hoping for the best. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the oil pressure and temp.
