I need to replace a tire on my Mustang but the other 3 are a year or two old. Do you guys think its a bad idea to replace just the one with the gash in it or should I but a set of two for the rear.
Id rather just spend the money on one as I plan on replacing the rims and tires all together eventually but at the same time I dont want to risk safety or traction just for the cost of one tire.

Are you racing or just goofing off on the street? Check tread depth and go from there... If you are just buying the same size and brand tire as the other side it's fine, so long as the tread depth on the existing tire is sufficient.

The only reason you would NEED to change both is if you are biying a different size tire. Side to side they should be the same, fronts and rears can be different, pretty common to have a RWD car with wider tires out back or a festiva with 165/70/12's in the rear and 195/45/14's up front.

same size and brand. old ones are probably 50% tread though.
Mainly just street driving but sometimes through mountain roads fairly vigorously.

You'll be fine, but tires make all the difference in handling. A fresh set of tires is always nice. I have full size spare tires for a couple of my vehicles, a 50% tread tire would be good for that. ^.^
