Is it true that it can be dangerous for my piston if the exhaust gasket is worn out between cylinder and pipe?

If so, why ?

I just read the wikipedi page about expansion chamber and the waves etc, so does it means if my exhaust could not flow perfectly in pipe (leaking at gasket), the back waves sucking the intake and keeping it from passing strait to the exhaust could not be on time and therefore the engine could run poor ?

Metal on metal is never good, the gasket is there for a reason, they are cheap why not just replace it?

It can suck fresh air back into the cylinder causing a lean condition. Lean=boom.
