I've had a vehicle stall on me while at highway speeds, but it was a manual, and I just pushed the clutch in. I've never had it happen in an automatic, and I'm curious...

What happens if an auto stalls at highway speeds? Would you have to pull to the side, or could you shift it to neutral and restart it?
I was posed this question at work today, and I had no basis for reply. What could be damaged, or strained by this happening?
I've got hunches, and assumptions, but I'm wondering if any of you have first hand experiences... Or even detailed theoretical descriptions.

Yes you could go to neutral and restart it. When you go back to drive the PCM should put it in the correct gear based on your speed. It wouldnt hurt to slow down though.

Thanks for the info guys. I had assumed such, but the dude asking the question had some interesting worries. Like loss of fluid pressure, or the engine not being able to tell the tranny what to do ( or going into first gear when you put it in (D) while going 55+.

Yep there no issue with putting it in nutral and starting up again and gOing back into gear, same as putting it in nutral while it's running and back into gear
