My inbox is now empty. Sorry about that.
All advice given, especially Koj's is really helpful.
First, decide what you want out of the car. Restore?/Modify?/Stock?
If it's a triple carburetor, Ferrari sounding monster. Go with the 240, as it is set up for carburetors.
However, if you want to do something like I've been doing: Fuel injection. Standalone engine management. Modern lighting and interior. Go with a 280, since they won't require as much modification in these regards.
ALL early Z cars have rust. ALL of em. Despite what you hear. It's NOT rust free. There is something hiding somewhere.
That said, there are very clean examples available....Only....Like Koj said, out west.
That's where I went for my car. I bought a California car for 2500 and spent 1000 shipping it here.
And that car is one of the cleanest Z's I've ever seen. I got really lucky. My ONLY rust hole, was in a random area in the rear underside of the car, and was about the size of a quarter.
Here are some classifieds for older Z cars. I think I saw a pretty nice 240 for $1300 the other day on HYBRIDZ (You'd be looking at Z's from 1970-1978 if you wanted the s30 body style)

Go West!
Manifest destiny baby!
