I have a 1998 Corolla VE(Stickshift) and lately my ignition doesn't turn over on the first attempt to start the car. Sometimes I have to sit there and try 20+ times to get the engine to turn over, sometimes it takes one try. I have no idea what it could be. My dad and I took the starter out of my car and had it tested at Auto Zone and they told us there was no problems with it. I think it might be my ignition itself or the clutch ignition switch but I have no idea, anyone have any idea what this might be?

Clutch safety switch, corroded contacts at the battery terminal just to name a few.

Try disconnecting the clutch safety switch and just jamming a fuse in the connector. If it works every time I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say that's your problem. Corrosion at your battery terminals will also do this.

This.

Its most likely the neutral safety switch, a bad starter, or a starter solenoid. Time to do some testing. Like Vengeance said start by making sure the safety switch is working properly.

Yeah, those have a tendency to go out after like a billion or so cycles...nearly 20 years of the clutch pedal being pressed and depressed will do you in, lol. 10 dollar trip to Autoblown?

Meh, 40. Sucks but it had to be done haha. At least it was easy as hell to replace.(Unlike replacing my clutch, that was a bitch.)
