I am on my phone so I haven't read the article, but I would say anything RWD that they come up with would have a BMW analog. The 1/3/5 series pretty much covers all size and performance ranges unless they make them cheaper than a 1 series which they could easily do if they go more Toyota like in the interior and refinement categories. I mean, a well optioned but far from loaded 135is is $50k. With a downgrade in fit and finish courtesy of Toyota they could come up with something that you could get loaded for around the same price as a Mustang or Camaro ($40k) and it would not really be competing with BMW or Toyota. People that want a BMW are still going to buy the BMW. Toyota doesn't have anything in that price range that it would compete with. It would have to be bigger and more powerful than the BRZ to keep from chopping it's knees. It would almost have to be aimed at the Genesis/Mustang market. Maybe even the performance version of the ATS when it happens since it is likely to carry enough BMW DNA that it will be seen as "Premium" or "Luxury" compared to other things in that price range.
I know BMW will want to keep it away from all of it's M cars in one way or another. Just my initial thoughts.
incase u didnt see the article yet here you go
Back in January of this year, BMW and Toyota signed an agreement to cooperate on joint development of a fuel cell system, joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle, collaboration on powertrain electrification and joint research and development on lightweight technologies. The two companies have now decided upon and agreed to develop a joint platform for sportscars, BMW's development chief Herbert Diess told a German newspaper.
"We have agreed on a joint architecture for a sports car. What is important is that there will be two different vehicles that are authentic to the two brands," Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung today quoted Diess as saying.
Diess declined to provide details on the models that would result from the cooperation, but much of the rumor mill surrounding this project since its inception has suggested a potential Supra and Z4 built on the shared platform.
A rumor from earlier this year reported that BMW was testing a BMW-built V6 hybrid motor which would deliver similar power to the new Supra - speculated to be 400+ HP (from a turbocharged 2.5L inline 4 cylinder hybrid or a mid-mounted 3.5L V6 hybrid). Another recent rumor suggested instead that a hybrid halo sports car would be the product of the collaboration.
The next Z4 is due 2015-2016.
