I need to do something about the ever advancing winter months approaching. I recently bought an early model Lexus IS300 and am worried about my first winter driving a RWD car.

I either need to buy a new set of all terrain tires for my OEM 17" rims. Or purchase winter rims/tires.

I have found this posting on Craigslist for exactly what I'm looking for, but is it worth the investment? Or should I just buy some A/T?
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/pts/4156844998.html

Picking these up would also allow me to purchase summer tires to use in the other 9 months of the year. Cheaper and better performance.

Opinions and experiences welcome.

Hard to tell how much tread is actually on them. They look like they've been used a couple seasons. But they should definitely have life left on em. I'd do it.
I had winterforces on my accord and it handled very well, comfortably drove through deep snow.

Where do you live.

I've never driven rear wheel drive, but like morph said, if you have bad winters, I'd feel it's probably a must have.

I couldn't go anywhere last winter in the snow with my BRZ (worked from home anytime it snowed, hoooray for VPN's)

I'm going to get snow tires on some steelies for this winter without a doubt, just waiting for it to get a little cooler outside. (maybe some sandbags in the trunk for extra weight too)

I live in the Greater Cincinnati area. Not a tremendous amount of snow but there is a solid month with snow/ice on the ground in the middle of the winter.

Thinking about picking them up, but I have no idea how to guage how much tread is left on winter tires. Lol

I'm assuming their tread is deeper than the low profile tires I'm accustom to having.

what tires do you have on there right now?
I just ordered a set of Micheline Pilot Sport A/S 3's for my vette, alot of the guys I've talked to about it said they are great all season tires. To me personally I'd rather have a good all season tire on there and not have to worry about it than having 2 sets of tires/rims. And I'm not sure if you have had summer tires before, but 9 months out of the year is optimistic if you live in Cincinnati area. I have the OEM Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercars and below 40 degress, they are horrible, and if you are commuting in the early morning, its going to be below 40 during your morning commute most days from november through march. Of course controlling your right foot makes everything much less extreme... but where is the fun in that?

its not the roads in cincy you have to worry about its the other drivers. most of them are horrible at driving. too many spooks rolling on dubs.

and id say theres about 4 months of good winter. when it starts is usually a guessing game. it might start snowing during halloween or it might not start until christmas (or later). and cincy is right on the line where you can get snow and/or ice. ive seen it snow in cincy and in kentucky on the south side of the river it done nothing but ice.

I live in NKY too, I don't think our winters get too bad to justify winter tires. I drove my Nova a lot last winter and never had a problem. That ice storm a couple years ago was brutal, but only for one day.

that was winter of 2010? i was on AA highway going south towards home and the hill starting at the intersection of AA and 27 (alexandria) was nothing but ice. every time i hit the brakes the trailer started jackknifing. i went from a stop/creep to about 40mph because i couldnt touch the brakes to slow down. that storm came out of nowhere and brutal is an accurate description lol

It's funny that you say that, I was at that Alexandria Kroger that day while I was delivering for Hostess and they hadn't salted the receiving area in back, I almost plowed right into the back of that Kohls or whatever it is that's next to it.

At that time I was driving one of the box trucks, which were the only trucks kept outside. I came in at about 4 am to 2 inches of ice covering the entire truck.

i was coming back from KU behind kentucky speedway and cut across industrial drive to turkeyfoot road. i hit the stoplight where i have to make a left onto turkeyfoot and the truck started jackknifing at about 3mph lol. i was like nooooooooooo all in slow motion it seemed like. that ice wasnt playing around. i made good time on 275 and got off at wilder and hit the bottom of the big hill and it took me 3 hours to make it like 1.5 miles to 27. after that i ran 55 down the AA with no problems because no one else was out then.

the road mightve been shut down idk but it wasnt stopping me lol.

and isnt that kohls and kroger in the shopping center with home depot?
