So back when I was 16 I bought a 1970 Baja bug project for 300 dollars and now im thinking about fixing it up

It doesn't have an engine but besides that it looks like its in pretty good shape. How difficult will it be to get running and how much do you think it'll cost to get a decent engine?

The bug sold over a million units. So naturally, parts are everywhere. Id expect minimal trouble finding an appropriate engine for the car. Air cooled guys have a cult like following, Id start by perusing vw forums and see if anyone has a long block fof you. Id spend as much on carburetors as I would the motor, and ditch the points for electronic ignition.

yep, a stock 1600 will be easy to find and even mildly built motors are a dime a dozen even on craigslist. Do your best to make sure the engine was built by a reputable builder and like mentioned, it's worth the investment in a nice carb / set of carbs + electronic ignition which isa super simple upgrade.

I see stock 1600's on craigslist here in CA for $200-500 every week.

They are beyond easy to work on... really a great first project car to get your hands dirty. Its literally like 6 bolts to pull the engine & trans out. I have done 4 trans swaps in my buddys old bug and they take about 30 mins to do while sipping on your beer
