You could probably leave a couple thousandths clearance but you will lose compression.
Friction depends on your clearances I would imagine. It would be similar to a roots style supercharger, how are they with friction? You would want your shafts geared and timed so they are spinning WITH each other and not driving each other. That would reduce friction.
It depends on the lobe shape. The new Eaton 3 lobe design and the new whipple produce very little friction. The tvs2300 on the ls9 makes 350tq at idle. Very efficient. The older designs not so much.
