Typically Im against buying new just because of how much money you lose. However, Ive been looking at 4dr wranglers for a good month now and they hold their value to well Im considering buying new. Most of them that are a few years old are still asking $20-25k when the base model starts at $25k.
My only requirements are hard top and automatic. Power doors/windows would be nice too though.

So the idea of buying new has sparked a few questions.
First, how hard will it be to negotiate prices on the wranglers? They seem to be selling pretty well so Im not sure if I could haggle much especially without a trade in or cash.
Say the wrangler w/ options is $27k, do you guys think I could et it for $25k including tax, tag, and title? I have no experience buying new so Im not certain how much they can really come off of the price.

Secondly, would I be better off financing through the dealer or through a credit union (Delta Community Credit Union).
If I can get a fairly low rate I wouldnt plan on putting much, if any, cash down. I have about $18k in student loans that are like 6% interest I would be better off paying towards.

Lastly, anyone think I would be better off finding an 07-08 for $18k (ish) and just going with it even though it will likely be 100k+ miles?

Few things.

If you can afford it...go with the newer years preferably CPO or something that comes with a warranty.

I wouldn't expect to have much leverage haggle-wise without some cash to throw around. (I'm horrible at negotiating that's what the wife is for)

Always explore your options...see what the dealership can offer incentive wise or what they can do for you at all. (Obviously you don't want to hurt yourself with too many credit checks)

Edit: I don't know about you but I prefer the vehicle to be as close to 100% stock as possible. Unless somebody throws some stupid rims which can be sold and purchase something of your liking. (Some places will drop price for customizations like that)

Nancy got a new mini van and thinks she runs the team now. I must one up her.

Ive thought about an older cherokee but I want something fairly nice out of the box that I can upgrade.

broken link is broken.

point was with the price difference you can do whatever you wanted to the older cherokee and still come out thousands of dollars ahead.

Convertible + removable doors + looks way better + nicer interior. Ive considered an older cherokee many times but I keep circling back to the wrangler unlimited.

interior and doors are a non issue considering how easy they are to update and mod on the cherokee.

the roof is the only hard part...but its still doable.

First off get financed by your credit union if at all possible. Stealerships are only worried about if you are comfortable with a specific monthly payment and will rip you the fuck off on the loan amount, interest, etc.

Second I would say to try and find one that is CPO(Certified Pre Owned) like iRTB said. They will come with a decent warranty and are usually thousands off the price of a new vehicle with minimal miles.

To put it in perspective though if you did want to get a new one you could prolly get them to knock a couple grand off. My 2011 Focus SE had an MSRP of like $19,300 + tax and license and I got them down to $17000 even + tax and license and most dealerships didnt even have 2011 Focus's at the time because they were selling so quick. If you dont ask you will never know.

And of course its always a good rule of thumb to walk away from a couple dealerships before pulling the trigger because thats when the good deals come out ;P

My other option as far as wranglers go is to find an older (07-08) 4 door with over 100k miles for around $15k and drive it till it breaks. Then Hemi swap for ~$10k and be at the same price as new but with a whole lot more power.
Only problem with that is you get stuck with a garbage transmission...
