This is on topic ..
Need to make an extension cord to run my mig welder.
What are the differences in the stove and dryer outlets? They're both running off 30A breakers.
I thought the stove was supposed to run a 50A breaker, but its not, I thought that was the difference.
Which would be better for running a 230V 30A-180A welder?
Going to use 10/3 wire to a NEMA 6-50R receptacle.

worst that could happen is the breaker keeps tripping (if the breaker is working as intended)

your welder will tell you the amperage somewhere on the label. So you can see exactly the draw.

But I'd recommend a 2 pole 50 amp breaker for a decently sized 220 welder, such as yours.

I have heard of it done many times before with the 30A dryer outlets.
I can't see it really being a problem if you use 10 wire and connect the wires correctly.

Yeah was a typo. Meant 230.

A 50 amp breaker is still what I would recommend.

Apologies for the confusion.

electrician here

dont put 50 amp breaker on 10 gauge wire, it is only designed to withstand 30 amps

the rating of the receptacle will only change the ground insert shape(meh i think its actually the neutral) so chose accordingly to your welder.

Thanks, did some googling and everyone has said 30A.
